Depression Therapy in Chicago
When life feels heavier than it should
You may find yourself going through the motions of daily life while feeling unmotivated or emotionally exhausted. Things that once felt enjoyable are no longer interesting. You might feel sad, irritable, empty, or simply “not yourself.”
Depression doesn't always look like being unable to get out of bed. Sometimes it can look like you’re functioning well on the outside but you’re struggling internally. You may be meeting your responsibilities, maintaining relationships, and doing everything you're supposed to do, but you still feel like something is missing.
At Chicago Psychotherapy & Consulting, we help adults understand their depression and the emotional and historical patterns that may contribute to it. Therapy offers an opportunity to explore what's happening beneath your symptoms, develop a deeper understanding of yourself, and begin to experience greater connection, vitality, and pleasure in your life.
What Can Depression Look Like?
Depression doesn't always show up like sadness. Sometimes it feels more like emptiness, a sense of disconnection, irritability, or a loss of interest in the things that once mattered to you. You may be keeping up with your day to day responsibilities while privately feeling exhausted, unmotivated, or unlike yourself.
You may be experiencing:
Persistent sadness or feelings of emptiness
Loss of interest or pleasure in everyday activities
Feeling emotionally numb or disconnected
Low motivation or difficulty starting tasks
Harsh self-criticism or feelings of worthlessness
Withdrawal from relationships
Changes in sleep, appetite, or energy
Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
Feeling stuck, hopeless, or uncertain about the future
Irritability or frustration
Sometimes depression can look like being highly functional on the outside while feeling disconnected, depleted, or deeply dissatisfied on the inside.
Why Does Depression Keep Happening?
Depression can have many causes, including biological, psychological, and environmental factors. Sometimes depression can develop in response to a loss, painful relationship dynamics, or a major life event. Other times, it seems to emerge without an obvious explanation.
Our emotional lives are shaped by experiences and relationships, often in ways we don't fully recognize or understand. You may have learned in your early relationships to put others’ needs ahead of your own, to measure your worth through achievement, or to be highly critical of yourself. Over time, such unrecognized patterns can contribute to feelings of emptiness, disconnection, or inadequacy.
Depression can also be a manifestation of feelings that have been difficult to acknowledge or express, such as anger, grief, disappointment, or longing. When emotions remain outside our awareness, they can influence how we experience ourselves and how we interact with others.
Therapy offers an opportunity to explore these patterns with curiosity and compassion. With awareness and understanding of the experiences and emotions that contribute to your depression, you can begin to develop a more flexible relationship with yourself, reconnect with what matters to you, and experience greater vitality and satisfaction in your life.
Depression can feel heavy and isolating, but you don’t have to navigate it alone. Our therapists provide a compassionate, supportive space to explore your history, understand longstanding patterns, and make meaningful changes that help you reconnect to yourself and the life you want to live.
